Transporting horses in heat: what’s changing and how to prepare

Summers are becoming hotter and more extreme — and this has direct consequences for animal transport. In the Netherlands, an important change is coming: a ban is being developed on transporting animals at temperatures above 30°C. The current limit is still 35°C, but is expected to be lowered by April 1, 2027.

Although this regulation officially applies to livestock, it is very likely that it will also affect horse transport. It is therefore important for horse owners, riders, and professionals to start preparing now.

What exactly is changing?

The current limit of 35°C has long been considered too high from an animal welfare perspective. Based on research and political pressure, it has been decided to lower this limit to 30°C.

This means:

  • Animal transport will be restricted sooner on hot days
  • More competitions and events may be affected
  • Stricter welfare requirements during transport

With the increasing number of hot days, this topic is becoming more relevant than ever.

What does this mean for horse transport?

Within the equestrian sector, protocols already exist for extreme temperatures. Events are often cancelled above 35°C.

However, there are exceptions.

Professional riders are often still allowed to transport horses if they have:

  • air-conditioned trucks
  • proper ventilation
  • active cooling solutions

This highlights one key point: cooling and ventilation make all the difference.

Why heat is a major risk for horses

Horses are sensitive to heat and cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently as humans. During transport, temperatures inside trailers can rise quickly.

Risks of transporting horses in heat:

  • overheating (heat stress)
  • dehydration
  • reduced performance
  • in severe cases: colic or even life-threatening situations

Even at temperatures below 30°C, the inside of a trailer can become significantly hotter.

The solution: active cooling and ventilation

To transport safely — and prepare for future regulations — active cooling is becoming increasingly important.
